About Bhai Phonta (Bhai Dooj / Bhratri Dwitiya)
উৎসব পরিচিতি
Bhai Phonta 2026 (ভাইফোঁটা ২০২৬), celebrated across India as Bhai Dooj, Bhratri Dwitiya, or Yama Dwitiya, will be observed with boundless affection on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 (corresponding to 25 Kartik 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika). Falling on the second lunar day (Shukla Paksha Dwitiya) following Kali Puja and Diwali, it is one of Bengal's most deeply cherished, emotional family celebrations honoring the unbreakable bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters.
On this sacred morning, sisters observe a strict fast until they apply the protective mark (Phonta) on their brothers' foreheads. The brother sits facing East on a wooden seat (Ashan). Using the little finger (Kanishtha) of her left hand, the sister applies a cooling mixture of pure white sandalwood paste (Chandan), holy curd (Doi), and herbal kajal in three sacred dots, rhythmically reciting the immortal Bengali invocation:
"Bhaier kapale dilam phonta, Jomer duare porlo kanta,Jamuna dey Jomke phonta, ami di amar bhaike phonta,Jom jemon omor, amar bhai jeno hoy temon omor!"
(Translation: "I place this sacred mark on my brother's forehead, casting a thorny obstacle at the doorway of Death; As Goddess Yamuna gave the mark to Yama, so do I to my brother; As Lord Yama is immortal, may my brother be immortal!")
Following the chant, the sister blesses her brother with sacred Durva grass, unbroken paddy grains (Dhan), and betel leaf, amidst high-pitched conch blasts (Shankhadhvani) and female Uludhvani. In return, brothers offer loving gifts, sarees, or blessings. The ritual culminates in a lavish family banquet featuring traditional fish preparations like Shorshe Ilish, Chingri Malaikari, Kosha Mangsho, Basanti Pulao, and iconic winter sweets like Nolen Gurer Sandesh.
History:
The mythological origin of Bhai Phonta is rooted in sacred Vedic and Puranic legends:
- Yama and Yamuna (Bhavishya Purana): According to ancient scripture, Goddess Yamuna (Yami), the daughter of the Sun God Surya, repeatedly invited her twin brother Lord Yama, the God of Death, to visit her dwelling. Absorbed in cosmic governance, Yama was long unable to visit. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, he surprised his sister. Overjoyed, Yamuna applied an auspicious tilak to his forehead, prepared an exquisite feast, and prayed for his eternal life. Deeply touched, Yamaraj granted a divine boon: any brother who receives a tilak and a meal from his sister on this day will be safeguarded from untimely death, accidental perils, and hellfire (Narak Yatan).
- Lord Krishna and Subhadra: Another beloved legend recounts that after vanquishing the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his beloved sister Subhadra on Dwitiya. Subhadra welcomed Krishna with golden lamps, applied a sacred protective sandalwood paste to his forehead, and showered him with sweet confections, cementing the ritual of sisterly veneration.
