About Diwali (Deepavali / Festival of Lights)

উৎসব পরিচিতি

Diwali 2026 (দীপাবলি ২০২৬), celebrated globally as Deepavali or the Festival of Lights, will illuminate homes and hearts on Sunday, November 8, 2026 (corresponding to 23 Kartik 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika). Deepavali falls on the dark new moon night (Kartik Amavasya) and is India's grandest, most culturally unifying festival, symbolizing the eternal triumph of spiritual light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and righteousness over malice.
The word Deepavali stems from the Sanskrit "Deepa" (clay oil lamp) and "Avali" (continuous row), translating to 'a row of glowing lamps'. On this magical evening, every rooftop, courtyard, window sill, and threshold is adorned with flickering terracotta diyas, sparkling fairy lights, and vibrant floral Rangoli patterns. Families dress in festive new attire, exchange luxurious boxes of sweets and dried fruits, burst dazzling eco-friendly fireworks, and pray for eternal peace and abundance.
In West Bengal and eastern India, the evening holds a special dual splendor: while trade establishments, Marwari, and Gujarati communities celebrate Deepavali with illuminations and Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja alongside commercial ledger consecration (Chopda Pujan / Halkhata), the wider Bengali populace simultaneously partakes in the midnight devotion of Maa Kali Puja, creating a magnificent celebration of light and shakti.
History:
The historical and philosophical tapestry of Diwali spans multiple sacred scriptures and traditions across the Indian subcontinent:
  1. Return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya: According to the Ramayana, Diwali marks the joyous day when Maryada Purushottam Lord Rama, Devi Sita, and Lakshmana returned to their capital of Ayodhya after 14 years of forest exile and the decisive defeat of the demon king Ravana. The citizens of Ayodhya illuminated the entire kingdom with millions of pure ghee earthen lamps to welcome their beloved king home.
  1. Samudra Manthan & Appearance of Goddess Lakshmi: The Vishnu Purana narrates that during the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk on Kartik Amavasya, Goddess Mahalakshmi manifested in supreme radiance holding a pink lotus and chose Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort. Worshipping Lakshmi on this night invites divine abundance and virtuous wealth into one's home.
  1. Lord Krishna's Defeat of Narakasura: In Southern and Western traditions, Diwali celebrates Lord Krishna and Satyabhama vanquishing the tyrannical demon Narakasura on Naraka Chaturdashi, liberating sixteen thousand imprisoned souls and restoring peace to the universe.
  1. Sikh and Jain Significance: For Jains, Diwali represents the historic dawn of Lord Mahavira attaining Nirvana (Moksha) at Pavapuri in 527 BCE. For Sikhs, Diwali is celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas, honoring the release of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, and 52 Hindu kings from the Mughal fortress of Gwalior.
