About Jagaddhatri Puja (জগদ্ধাত্রী পূজা)

উৎসব পরিচিতি

Jagaddhatri Puja 2026 (জগদ্ধাত্রী পূজা ২০২৬) will be celebrated from Monday, November 16 to Thursday, November 19, 2026, with the main Maha Navami Puja falling on Wednesday, November 18, 2026 (corresponding to 3 Agrahayana 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika). Goddess Jagaddhatri is an aspect of Durga and the supreme cosmic protectress of the universe ('Jagat-Dhatri' meaning 'Bearer and Sustainer of the Cosmos').
Celebrated on the Shukla Navami of the month of Kartika, Jagaddhatri Puja is world-renowned for the legendary celebrations in Chandannagar (Hooghly) and Krishnanagar (Nadia). In Chandannagar, the festival rivals Durga Puja with colossal 30-foot golden clay idols and the world's most intricate computerized street illumination created by lighting artists. In Krishnanagar, the traditional 'Burima' idol at Chasapara is adorned with over 300 kilograms of solid gold and silver ornaments.
Unlike the four-day rituals of Durga Puja, the traditional worship of Jagaddhatri is unique because all three days of worship—Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami—are ritually performed across three successive praharas on a single day (Navami). Devotees maintain an all-day fast and participate in three consecutive pushpanjalis before concluding with grand community bhog.
History:
The theological origin of Goddess Jagaddhatri is documented in the Kena Upanishad and the Katyayani Tantra:
  1. The Subjugation of Gods' Pride (Yaksha Akhyayika): After Goddess Durga vanquished Mahishasura, the Devas grew boastful, claiming that their own powers had destroyed the asuras. To humble them, Brahman manifested as an enigmatic glowing spirit (Yaksha). Agni could not burn a blade of dry grass, Vayu could not blow it away, and Indra could not touch it. Lord Shiva and Brahma revealed the Yaksha to be the Supreme Power (Uma Haimavati). To demonstrate that she holds the cosmic universe, she appeared seated atop a lion which stomps an elephant—the elephant representing the swollen elephant of arrogance (Karindrasura) crushed under the weight of divine truth.
  1. Sarada Devi's Mother & Jayrambati: Jagaddhatri Puja holds extraordinary spiritual significance for the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. In 1877, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi's mother, Shyamasundari Devi, initiated Jagaddhatri Puja in Jayrambati after facing obstacles in paying paddy taxes. Since then, the monastery celebrates it annually with immense devotion.
  1. Maharaja Krishnachandra of Krishnanagar: In the 18th century, King Krishnachandra was imprisoned by Nawab Mir Qasim for unpaid taxes. Released on Vijaya Dashami, he arrived home weeping that he had missed Durga Puja. That night, Goddess Durga appeared in his dream as Jagaddhatri, instructing him to worship her on Kartik Shukla Navami. He organized the grand festival in Krishnanagar, which his friend Indranarayan Choudhury soon introduced to the French colony of Chandannagar.
