About Guru Nanak Jayanti (Gurpurab / Prakash Parv)

উৎসব পরিচিতি

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026 (গুরু নানক জয়ন্তী ২০২৬), reverently commemorated worldwide as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, marks the 557th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the revered founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. In 2026, this sacred festival will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 24, 2026 (corresponding to 9 Agrahayana 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika), on the full moon day (Kartik Purnima).
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 CE at Rai Bhoi Di Talwandi (present-day Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). He preached the revolutionary message of 'Ik Onkar' (One Universal Supreme Creator), championing the absolute equality of all human beings regardless of caste, gender, creed, or social status. His eternal life philosophy rests upon three golden pillars: Naam Japna (remembering the divine name), Kirat Karo (earning through honest labour), and Vand Chhako (sharing one's wealth and food with the needy).
Celebrations in Kolkata and West Bengal center around historic Gurdwaras such as Gurdwara Bara Sikh Sangat in Burrabazar and Gurdwara Jagat Sudhar in Bhawanipore. Two days prior to Gurpurab, gurdwaras initiate an uninterrupted 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib (Akhand Path). The celebrations feature colorful Nagar Kirtan processions led by the five beloved ones (Panj Pyare) displaying traditional martial arts (Gatka), soul-stirring hymns (Shabad Kirtan), and community kitchens serving vegetarian feast (Langar) to all visitors without distinction.
History:
The historical significance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's life revolutionized medieval Indian spirituality and social structure:
  1. Divine Awakening at Kali Bein: While residing in Sultanpur Lodhi, Guru Nanak stepped into the Kali Bein river for his morning ablution and disappeared for three days. When he emerged, filled with divine radiance, his first historic utterance was: 'Na koi hindu, na koi musalman' ('There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim'—all are children of the One Creator).
  1. The Four Great Journeys (Udasis): For nearly three decades, Guru Nanak traveled thousands of miles across Asia on foot—from Mecca and Baghdad in the West to Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Bengal in the East. Accompanied by his Muslim minstrel companion Bhai Mardana, who played the stringed Rabab, and Hindu disciple Bhai Bala, Guru Nanak visited Puri and Bengal in 1508 CE, dialoguing with scholars and establishing the unity of humankind.
  1. Establishment of Sangat and Pangat: In his final years at Kartarpur, Guru Nanak established the revolutionary institutions of Sangat (egalitarian congregation) and Pangat (eating together seated on the floor in rows), smashing centuries of untouchability and social stratification by mandating that emperors and laborers eat the same meal side by side.
