About Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse)(উৎসব পরিচিতি)
A Solar Eclipse (Surya Grahan) occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily casting a shadow on the Earth. In Hindu astronomy and Bengali Panjika tradition, eclipses during Amavasya carry profound spiritual, astronomical, and astrological significance.
According to traditional Vedic scriptures, observing Sutak Kaal rules (the inauspicious period before and during the eclipse) is essential. During Sutak, traditional practices recommend refraining from cooking, starting new ventures, or performing deity worship. Adding Tulsi leaves to stored water and food before Sutak is a widely followed practice in Bengali households.
In Puranic mythology, the eclipse is traditionally associated with the legend of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean), where the demon Swarbhanu drank the divine nectar (Amrita). Sun and Moon alerted Lord Vishnu, who severed Swarbhanu's head, creating Rahu and Ketu, who periodically eclipse the Sun and Moon.
Spiritual activities such as chanting mantras, meditation, donating food or clothes (Daan) to the needy after the eclipse, and taking a holy dip after eclipse release (Moksha) are considered immensely beneficial.
