Kanya Sankranti marks the precise astronomical moment when the Sun transits from Simha Rashi (Leo) into Kanya Rashi (Virgo) in the solar calendar. In the Bengali Panjika, it inaugurates the solar month of Kanya and coincides with Vishwakarma Puja.
History: In Vedic solar astronomy, Kanya Sankranti is one of the 12 Sankrantis marking solar month transitions. Ancient astronomers like Varahamihira calculated Sankranti timings to determine agricultural seasonal shifts.
Significance: Kanya Sankranti is considered an auspicious time for Snan (holy river bath), Surya Arghya (water offering to the Sun God), and Daan (charity of grains, clothes, and sesame). Coinciding with Vishwakarma Puja, it carries double auspiciousness in Bengal.
