About Maha Navami (Durga Navami)

উৎসব পরিচিতি

Maha Navami 2026 (মহা নবমী ২০২৬) is celebrated on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (corresponding to 4 Kartik 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika). It represents the fourth and final day of active worship in Durga Puja, marking the triumphant vanquishing of the buffalo demon Mahishasura by Goddess Durga.
The central religious rite of Maha Navami is the grand Navami Homa (Maha Yagna)—a monumental Vedic sacrificial fire ritual conducted with sacred bel wood, pure clarified butter (ghee), sesame seeds, and sacred samidha. The sacred fire leaps towards the sky as priests chant ancient mantras from the Devi Mahatmyam, offering prayers for the destruction of evil and the blessing of peace, abundance, and righteousness across the universe.
Following the sacred Yagna, community pandals offer the lavish Maha Bhog to the Goddess. As evening descends, pandals across Kolkata, Howrah, and Bengal transform into seas of vibrant humanity. Devotees participate in energetic Dhunuchi Naach competitions, and families embark on their final all-night pandal hopping tours with a bittersweet heart, knowing that the Mother's departure on Dashami is just hours away.
History:
According to Hindu mythology, Maha Navami is the day Goddess Durga delivered the fatal blow to Mahishasura. For nine relentless days and nights, the demon shifted shapes—from buffalo to lion, elephant, and warrior—testing the cosmic powers of the Divine Mother. On Navami, as he resumed his gigantic buffalo form, Maa Durga pinned him with her trident (Trishula) and severed his head, liberating the three worlds (Triloka) from tyranny.
In the Krittivasi Ramayana, Lord Rama concluded his Akalbodhan puja on Navami with a grand Homa before marching to slay Ravana on Dashami (celebrated across Northern India as Dussehra / Vijayadashami).
In Bengal's historic Bonedi baris, Maha Navami holds unique historical traditions. Some royal families (like the Cossimbazar Rajbari and Krishnanagar Rajbari) historically offered special Kalyani Bhog and performed symbolic weapon worship (Astra Puja), honoring the swords, shields, and spears that defended their realms.
