About Vijaya Dashami (Bijaya Dashami & Dussehra)

উৎসব পরিচিতি

Vijaya Dashami 2026 (বিজয়া দশমী ২০২৬), also affectionately known as Bijaya Dashami, falls on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 (corresponding to 5 Kartik 1433 Bangabda in the Bengali Panjika). It is the deeply poignant, emotional, yet socially unifying culmination of the five-day Durga Puja.
On this day, Goddess Durga prepares to bid farewell to her earthly maternal home and journey back to her celestial abode on Mount Kailash alongside Lord Shiva. The morning rites begin with Aparajita Puja and the solemn ritual of Darpan Visarjan—where the reflection of the Goddess is caught in a sacred mirror placed in a bowl of water, symbolizing her departure while leaving her divine blessings in our hearts.
Following the mirror ritual, the atmosphere shifts to the vibrant joy of Sindoor Khela. Married women dressed in resplendent white-and-red sarees offer sweets, betel leaves, and vermilion to Maa Durga, gently wiping tears from her cheeks, and then playfully apply red sindoor to each other's faces, wishing long life and prosperity for their husbands and families. In the afternoon and evening, millions gather along the banks of the Hooghly (Ganga) river at Babughat, Bagbazar Ghat, and Nimtala for the grand Visarjan (idol immersion) amidst thunderous cries of 'Bolo Durga Mai Ki Jai! Asche Bochar Abar Hobe!' (Hail Mother Durga! She will return next year!). The day culminates in Shubho Bijaya, where younger generations touch the feet of elders for blessings, friends share warm 'Kolakoli' hugs, and every home serves handmade Nimki, Narkel Naru, and Sandesh.
History:
The theological roots of Vijaya Dashami represent the ultimate victory (Vijaya) of dharma over adharma. In North India and across the subcontinent, it is celebrated as Dussehra, marking Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana, celebrated with burning gigantic effigies of Ravana, Meghnada, and Kumbhakarna.
In Bengal's Shakta tradition, Vijaya Dashami carries a uniquely tender and familial ethos. Maa Durga is regarded not merely as an awe-inspiring supreme Goddess, but as Uma—the beloved daughter of Bengal. Her departure evokes the universal sorrow of a mother bidding farewell to her married daughter. The sorrow is sweetened by the promise of renewal: Asche bochor abar hobe.
Historically, the tradition of idol immersion (Visarjan) in the Hooghly river has taken place for centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries, two pairs of country boats (Nilkantha Pakhi ritual) carried the aristocratic idols to the center of the river before gently lowering them into the water. Today, the West Bengal government hosts the world-famous Red Road Carnival in Kolkata shortly after Dashami, showcasing the finest award-winning puja idols before their final immersion.

The Social Bond of Shubho Bijaya:

Shubho Bijaya erases past grievances and unifies community bonds. Through Kolakoli (warm fraternal embraces) and Pranam (touching elders' feet for Ashirbad), peace and mutual respect are renewed.
