Maha Sasthi 2026 falls on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Maha Sasthi marks the official beginning of Durga Puja celebrations in Bengal. On Shashthi evening, priests perform Bodhon (the awakening of Goddess Durga under a Bel tree), Amantran (invitation), and Adhivas (consecration). The veil covering the face of Maa Durga's idol is formally removed, and pandals open to millions of visitors across Kolkata and Bengal.
History: According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama performed an unseasonal awakening (Akal Bodhon) of Goddess Durga in autumn before fighting Ravana. Following Rama's precedent, Durga Puja is celebrated in autumn (Sharadiya Durga Puja).
Significance: Maha Sasthi is a public holiday in West Bengal. Pandals light up, Dhaak drummers begin playing, and families step out for Shashthi evening pandal hopping.
